Like many practitioners, I first approached the Mook Yan Jong as a traditional part of the Wing Chun curriculum. I learned the form, repeated the movements, and gradually became familiar with its techniques. Long before we learned to speak, we began to understand the world through contact; through our hands we explored, recognized, reassured, and connected with the people and the world around us. In many ways, touch was our first language. Within wooden dummy training, this ordinary human capacity becomes something extraordinary. The wooden dummy invites us to return to that first language with greater attention, greater sensitivity, and greater understanding. Over time, I came to believe that the greatest gift of the wooden dummy is not that it teaches us techniques; its greatest gift is that it teaches us to perceive.

There is one expression of gratitude that I cannot leave unspoken. Across generations it has been practiced, photographed, demonstrated, and preserved as one of Wing Chun’s defining traditions, yet familiarity should not be mistaken for understanding. Ask ten practitioners what the wooden dummy is for and the answers will often sound remarkably similar. Some describe it as a striking apparatus for developing power. Others see it as a catalogue of techniques or a method for memorizing the wooden dummy form. Some view it as a conditioning device, while others regard it simply as another stage in the traditional curriculum after the empty-hand forms and Chi Sao. Each of these explanations contains an element of truth, yet none fully explains why such a remarkably sophisticated instrument occupies such a central place within Wing Chun. If the wooden dummy were simply a striking device, countless other training tools could accomplish the same objective; if its purpose were merely to preserve techniques, books and videos could fulfill that role more efficiently; and if its value lay only in physical conditioning, there are far more effective methods for strengthening the body. The question therefore remains: What problem was the wooden dummy originally designed to solve?

Perhaps the difficulty lies not in the instrument itself, but in the assumptions, we bring to it. Much of contemporary martial arts instruction begins by identifying techniques as discrete entities. Tan Sau, Bong Sau, Pak Sau, Wu Sau, and countless others are introduced as recognizable forms that must be learned individually before being combined into increasingly complex sequences. From this perspective, progress is measured by how accurately each technique can be reproduced, and the wooden dummy then becomes a place where those techniques are rehearsed. Every system of education begins by defining its primary object of study. A musician studies sound, an architect studies structure, and a physician study the living body. The way a discipline understands its object determines how it teaches, how it practices, and ultimately how expertise develops. Wing Chun is no different. Before discussing methods of training, it is worth asking a more fundamental question: what exactly is being developed through practice? For many practitioners, the answer appears straightforward. Wing Chun contains a vocabulary of recognizable techniquesโ€”Tan Sau, Bong Sau, Pak Sau, Wu Sau, Fook Sau, Gan Sau, and many others. Training therefore becomes a process of refining these individual movements until they can be performed consistently, accurately, and effectively. This approach has important educational value. Named techniques provide a shared language between teacher and student, allowing complex movements to be identified, organized, studied, and transmitted across generations. Without this vocabulary, preserving and communicating a martial tradition would become extremely difficult.

However, while this method organizes knowledge effectively, an important question remains: does it completely describe the nature of movement itself? Consider the transition between Tan Sau and Bong Sau. At what exact moment does Tan Sau end and Bong Sau begin? Is there a precise boundary separating one from the other, or does one gradually transform into the next through a continuous series of changing relationships that are difficult to capture with a single name? This question may appear philosophical, but it has direct consequences for training. If movement is understood only as a sequence of fixed positions, then the transitions between those positions can easily become overlooked; they become merely the empty space between techniques rather than something meaningful in themselves. The practitioner may focus heavily on arriving at recognizable shapes while paying less attention to the continuous process through which those shapes emerge, yet in actual movement, the transition is not empty spaceโ€”it contains critical information regarding changes in pressure, angle, timing, structure, and relationship.

The methodology discussed in this work begins from this understanding: techniques should not be viewed only as isolated motor actions, but as temporary functional expressions within a continuous process of transformation. During movement, nothing remains fixed. Pressure, angles, distance, body orientation, and the direction and quality of force continuously change, and as these relationships transform, the functional requirements of the movement transform with them. From this perspective, Tan Sau, Bong Sau, Pak Sau, Wu Sau, and other Wing Chun expressions are not simply fixed destinations; they are recognizable moments within a much larger landscape of movement. Their names remain valuable because they allow us to communicate, organize experience, and preserve knowledge, but the name of a movement should not be mistaken for the living process of movement itself, which exists long before language describes it.

Because the dummy provides a stable and consistent structure, it allows these relationships to be investigated repeatedly; every change in angle, every adjustment in pressure, and every transition between movements becomes available for careful study. This distinction explains why two practitioners may perform movements that appear nearly identical while developing very different qualities. One practitioner may reproduce the visible form of a movement with great accuracy, while another perceives the changing relationships of pressure, structure, and timing from which that movement emerges. Externally, the difference may be difficult to see, but internally, the organization is completely different. The difference is not only mechanical but perceptual, concerning what the practitioner has learned to notice. From this perspective, advanced skill is not measured only by the accumulation of techniques, but by the refinement of perception that guides them. Traditionally, the Mook Yan Jong has been described as a training apparatus, a conditioning device, or a method for preserving Wing Chun movements. Each of these descriptions captures an important aspect of its role, yet none fully explains its educational significance. A violin does more than produce music; through years of disciplined practice, it transforms how the musician hears tone, rhythm, resonance, and expression. Likewise, an experienced sculptor no longer encounters stone simply as material to be shaped; the stone begins revealing qualities of balance, weight, resistance, and possibility that remain largely invisible to the novice. The wooden dummy functions in the same way, transforming what first appears to be a fixed wooden structure into a rich medium through which increasingly subtle relationships between pressure, timing, structure, distance, and movement can be explored.

This transformation cannot be achieved through explanation alone. A teacher may describe correct structure, books may explain principles, and videos may demonstrate movement with remarkable clarity. Each plays an important role in learning, yet none can replace the education that develops through sustained physical interaction, because there is a fundamental difference between knowledge about movement and knowledge acquired through movement. One may understand the theory of balance without possessing balance, explain pressure without being able to organize it effectively, or memorize every named expression within Wing Chun while remaining unable to perceive the changing relationships from which those expressions emerge.

The visible technique may be the same, yet the perceptual organization underlying that movement may differ completely, resting entirely on what each practitioner has gradually learned to perceive. Seen from this perspective, the true significance of the wooden dummy lies in preserving a particular way of learning, shifting its value away from the movements it contains and toward the gradual transformation of the practitioner’s capacity to perceive movement itself. Chapter 4: Touch Before Technique: The Neurological Foundation of Wooden Dummy Training

If the wooden dummy can be understood as an instrument that refines perception, an important question naturally follows: What exactly is being refined? The answer begins not with Wing Chun technique, but with the human body itself. Every moment of contact between the hand and the wooden dummy initiates a complex interaction between the body and the nervous system. What appears externally as a simple touch is, internally, the beginning of a continuous exchange of sensory information that allows movement to be perceived, evaluated, and reorganized in real time. Throughout the skin, muscles, tendons, connective tissues, and joints are specialized sensory receptors that respond to mechanical changes occurring both within the body and between the body and its environment. Among these are mechanoreceptors, which detect pressure, stretch, vibration, deformation, and movement, transmitting these signals through the nervous system to continually inform the brain about the body’s relationship to its surroundings.

Without this sensory feedback, coordinated movement would be severely limited. Modern neuroscience no longer understands movement as a simple series of commands sent from the brain to the body; rather, movement emerges through a continuous interaction between motor intention and sensory feedback. Every action immediately generates new information, and that information continually modifies subsequent action, meaning movement is continuously regulated through perception rather than simply produced by the body. The hands occupy a particularly remarkable position within this process. The fingers and palms possess one of the richest concentrations of tactile receptors in the human body and correspondingly large representations within the sensory and motor regions of the cerebral cortex. This extraordinary sensitivity explains why the human hand is capable of remarkable precision, whether performing delicate surgery, playing a violin, or manipulating fine tools.

Wing Chun places these same biological capacities at the center of martial training. The purpose of maintaining contact is therefore not simply to remain physically connected to another object, but to educate the practitioner’s ability to recognize, interpret, and organize the information transmitted through contact itself. Pressure, changes in angle, resistance, release, and even the temporary absence of pressure all become rich sources of information, allowing the practitioner to gradually recognize details that were always present but previously passed unnoticed. This understanding also explains why the quality of practice matters far more than the number of repetitions alone. Repetition is indispensable for learning, but repetition without awareness merely stabilizes existing patterns of organization. If movement is consistently performed with unnecessary muscular tension, poor structural alignment, or diminished sensitivity, those same patterns gradually become reinforced; practice does not automatically produce improvement, but reinforces whatever is repeatedly experienced.

Effective wooden dummy training is therefore the repeated refinement of perception, where each return to the dummy offers an opportunity to recognize increasingly subtle variations in pressure, angle, timing, continuity, and structural relationship. This principle explains the deliberate progression from simplicity toward complexity found within this methodology. Complex skills rarely develop by confronting every variable simultaneously; instead, effective learning begins by reducing complexity so that essential relationships can first be perceived clearly before they are integrated into more sophisticated movement. The objective is not to simplify Wing Chun itself, but to simplify perception.

With fewer variables competing for attention, the practitioner begins recognizing details that would otherwise disappear within greater complexity, such as subtle changes in wrist rotation, small differences in pressure, variations in angle, and the precise moment at which structural continuity begins to weaken. These discoveries are acquired through repeated sensory experience long before they can be fully explained in words. As this perceptual foundation matures, additional complexity is gradually introduced: a second arm is incorporated, multiple contact points begin interacting simultaneously, and turning, stepping, and whole-body coordination become increasingly integrated. At this stage, the practitioner is no longer simply performing more movements; the nervous system is learning to organize multiple streams of tactile information into a coherent pattern of coordinated action.

This progression from simplicity toward increasing complexity appears throughout many highly developed disciplines. A musician first develops sensitivity to individual notes before performing an entire composition, and a craftsman masters individual operations before integrating them into a complete work. In much the same way, wooden dummy training gradually develops the capacity to organize increasingly complex movement without sacrificing perceptual clarity, operating on the principles that precision precedes complexity, clarity precedes speed, and perception precedes expression. The wooden dummy provides an ideal environment for this educational process because it offers absolute consistency. Unlike a training partner, it does not alter its intention, timing, emotional state, or structural organization. The same relationships remain available every time the practitioner returns, allowing increasingly subtle aspects of movement to be investigated under stable conditions. This consistency is not a limitation but precisely what makes deeper observation possible, allowing the practitioner to first learn to feel, then learn to organize what is felt, until movement begins to express that organization naturally. From this perspective, tactile awareness is not an additional quality layered onto technique, but one of the biological foundations from which intelligent technique emerges, educating the practitioner’s capacity to perceive movement itself. This naturally raises another question: If perception develops through practice, why do some practitioners repeat the same movements for many years without undergoing significant transformation? In practical application, this process of neurological adaptation begins by strictly isolating a single arm against one arm of the wooden dummy. Imagine the practitioner placing a single forearm against the upper arm of the dummy. As the arm presses against the unyielding wood, the practitioner is not trying to overpower the structure, but rather learning to read force and maintain absolute centerline dominance. Every repetition becomes a study in how force transmits from the hand through the wrist, and how small changes in angle instantly affect structural stability and balance. This isolated dialogue builds a deep neuromuscular coordination between the hand, the stance, and the practitioner’s shifting body mass. By neutralizing the chaotic variables of multi-limb movement, this foundational single-arm work builds true functional skill rather than performance-based display, establishing the stable technical base required before the nervous system can effectively progress to more complex two-arm sequences.

One of the fundamental characteristics of highly developed movement is that it appears continuous. Experienced practitioners move with remarkable fluidity, adapting naturally to changing conditions without obvious interruption, yet this continuity is not where learning begins; it is where learning arrives. Across many disciplines, complex skill develops through a similar educational progression. A musician does not begin by performing an entire concerto, a sculptor does not begin with a finished statue, and a surgeon does not begin with the most demanding operation. Each first learns to recognize, organize, and refine the essential elements of the craft before integrating them into increasingly complex performance. The methodology presented in this work follows the same educational principle, deliberately reducing complexity so that fundamental relationships can be perceived with greater clarity before they are integrated into more sophisticated movement. This progression distinguishes the methodology inherited within my own tradition of wooden dummy training, isolating individual relationships because they belong to a much larger, more integrated whole. When only one primary relationship is being studied, attention is no longer overwhelmed by multiple simultaneous demands, and the practitioner becomes capable of observing vital questions of perception through touch: How does pressure enter the wrist? How does it travel through the forearm toward the elbow? How does a small change in rotation influence the entire structure? At what point does continuity begin to weaken?

The apparent simplicity of one-arm training therefore conceals considerable complexity, turning each repetition into an investigation rather than a simple rehearsal. The practitioner learns to distinguish increasingly subtle differences in pressure, angle, timing, wrist rotation, structural alignment, and continuity. As tactile awareness becomes more refined, movement gradually becomes more economical; unnecessary muscular effort decreases, compensatory movements become easier to recognize, and a more efficient organization emerges naturally because refined perception allows less efficient solutions to reveal themselves. Only after this perceptual foundation has matured does additional complexity enter the training and a second arm is introduced. Immediately, the educational task changes from organizing a single tactile relationship to coordinating multiple simultaneous streams of information. Each hand both receives and transmits force, making turning, stepping, body alignment, and bilateral coordination inseparable from what the hands perceive through contact. Although complexity has increased, the nervous system is not encountering entirely unfamiliar problems, but is learning to coordinate relationships that have already been thoroughly explored individually.

This distinction is fundamental: the second stage does not replace segmentation but depends upon it, carrying the clarity developed through simplified practice into increasingly complex organization. Only within this progression does the complete wooden dummy form reveal its deeper educational purpose. Viewed superficially, the form appears to be a traditional sequence of techniques arranged in a prescribed order; viewed through the progression established by one-arm and two-arm practice, however, it becomes the integration of an already educated perceptual system. The practitioner is no longer occupied with individual techniques or isolated movements; previously independent relationships begin organizing themselves into continuous expression, transforming the form from an exercise in memorization into an act of profound integration. Nothing fundamentally new has been added; what changes is the level of organization, as relationships previously studied individually now function together as a coherent whole.

This educational progression also explains why repetition alone rarely produces genuine expertise, as repeating complex movement before perception has matured frequently overwhelms the nervous system. The practitioner may become highly proficient at reproducing external choreography while remaining relatively unaware of the tactile relationships that give the movement its functional intelligence. Segmentation addresses this problem by allowing perception to mature before complexity expands, moving in a deliberate sequence: the practitioner first learns to recognize, then to organize, and finally to express. This progression reflects a broader principle found throughout skilled human activity, where complexity is mastered through the gradual organization of simple relationships into increasingly integrated systems. The wooden dummy provides an ideal environment for this process because its stable structure allows each functional relationship to be isolated, examined, and progressively integrated without sacrificing continuity. Ultimately, continuity is not something the practitioner consciously performs, but something that naturally emerges once the underlying relationships have been sufficiently understood and organized. This proposes that genuine continuity cannot be imposed from the outside; it emerges from an increasingly organized relationship between perception, movement, and touch, teaching the practitioner how complex movement comes into existence.

Chapter 6: Why Repetition Alone Does Not Produce Skill

Few ideas are repeated more often in martial arts than the belief that repetition is the key to mastery. The advice appears almost self-evident: practice more, repeat the movement thousands of times, and skill will eventually emerge. Certainly, repetition is indispensable; without repeated experience, the nervous system cannot stabilize movement, refine coordination, or develop reliable motor patterns. Yet repetition alone cannot explain expertise. If repetition by itself were sufficient, every practitioner who spent years performing the wooden dummy form would eventually reach the same level of understanding. Experience clearly suggests otherwise: some practitioners repeat the same movements for decades with relatively little change in their functional ability, while others continue refining their movement throughout a lifetime of practice. The difference cannot be explained simply by counting repetitions; it lies in what each repetition is teaching.

The nervous system does not learn simply because movement has been repeated; rather, repeated experience gradually stabilizes whatever organization is present during practice. Every repetition reinforces something. If movement is consistently performed with unnecessary muscular tension, repetition strengthens tension; if structural relationships repeatedly collapse under pressure, repetition reinforces that pattern; and likewise, if attention remains focused only on reproducing visible movements, repetition strengthens external choreography while the deeper relationships governing movement remain largely unexplored. Repetition should therefore not be understood as the source of skill, but as the mechanism through which organization becomes increasingly stable, meaning the quality of that organization determines the quality of the resulting skill. This is where the educational value of the wooden dummy becomes particularly significant. The same educational principle applies to complexity, as attempting increasingly complicated sequences before perceptual organization has matured frequently overwhelms attention, leading to choreography without sensitivity. For this reason, the progression presented throughout this work moves from segmentation toward integration, introducing complexity only after clarity has been firmly established.

This principle extends well beyond martial arts. A concert pianist does not improve simply by repeating notes, but refines touch, timing, and expression; a calligrapher does not merely reproduce characters, but uses the brush to reveal increasingly subtle relationships of pressure, rhythm, and direction; and an experienced surgeon does not repeat procedures mechanically, as small differences in tissue resistance become deeply meaningful through years of attentive practice. Across all mature disciplines, repetition serves perceptionโ€”it does not replace it. Wooden dummy training belongs to this same family of disciplined practices, aiming not simply to automate movement, but to cultivate increasingly intelligent movement through increasingly refined awareness. Eventually, a significant transformation begins to occur: the practitioner no longer strives to perform movement correctly through conscious control alone, as efficient organization begins to emerge naturally because the nervous system has gradually learned to recognize it. Skill is no longer sustained primarily by memory, but is increasingly supported by understanding. At this point, another question naturally arises: If intelligent movement emerges from organized perception rather than memorized techniques, how does that understanding express itself when interacting with another human being? This distinction is subtle, yet it fundamentally changes how practice is understood. During interaction with another person, movement unfolds too rapidly and changes too continuously for the practitioner to consciously search through a catalogue of memorized techniques. During one-arm training, the practitioner studies individual functional relationships with exceptional clarity, examining the relationship between wrist and elbow, the transmission of pressure, subtle changes in angle, and the influence of turning upon structure without unnecessary complexity. As training progresses into two-arm practice, these same relationships become increasingly interconnected, requiring multiple streams of tactile information to be received, organized, and expressed simultaneously. Turning, stepping, bilateral coordination, and structural continuity become inseparable aspects of a single adaptive process. Finally, within the complete wooden dummy form, these previously segmented relationships become integrated into uninterrupted movement. Nothing fundamentally new has been introduced; rather, relationships that were previously examined individually have gradually become organized into a coherent whole, and application develops through precisely the same progression.

The practitioner does not search for isolated techniques learned from the wooden dummy; instead, the perceptual and structural qualities cultivated through practice become readily available during interaction with another human being. A small change in pressure influences stepping; turning reorganizes angle; angle alters hand function; hand function reorganizes structure; and structure changes pressure once again. Every element continuously influences every other, meaning the practitioner is no longer selecting techniques, but organizing relationships. This understanding also explains why the qualities cultivated through wooden dummy training extend beyond any particular fighting method, as coordination, sensitivity to pressure, efficient turning, structural organization, and tactile awareness are universal human capacities. Wing Chun provides a sophisticated framework for developing these qualities, but the capacities themselves possess significance beyond any single martial system, becoming available whenever human movement demands precision, adaptability, and intelligent organization under changing conditions.

The purpose of wooden dummy training is therefore not to prepare the practitioner for predetermined situations, but to cultivate the perceptual, structural, and coordinative capacities from which appropriate action can emerge. Eventually, the practitioner’s internal dialogue changes from, “Which technique should I use?” to a far more natural inquiry: “What does this relationship require?” The answer no longer depends primarily upon memory, but emerges from an increasingly organized relationship between perception, touch, and movement, marking one of the most significant transitions in the entire learning process. The practitioner no longer attempts to apply the wooden dummy; rather, the understanding cultivated through practice expresses itself naturally whenever meaningful contact occurs. Application is therefore not transferred from the dummy to the opponent, but is expressed directly through the practitioner, fulfilling the instrument’s educational purpose by transforming the way movement itself is perceived and organized.

There comes a stage in every mature discipline when learning is no longer defined primarily by the acquisition of new information; instead, the practitioner begins to experience familiar things in unfamiliar ways. A musician no longer hears only individual notes but the relationships that give music its expression; an architect no longer sees only buildings but the organization of space; and a physician gradually learns to recognize patterns that remain invisible to the inexperienced observer. In each case, years of disciplined practice reshape not only performance but perception itself, and the same transformation may occur in wooden dummy training. In the early stages of practice, attention is naturally directed toward visible movement, concentrating on the position of the hands, the accuracy of the sequence, the timing of turning, and whether a particular technique resembles the instructor’s demonstration. These concerns are both necessary and unavoidable, as every discipline begins by learning its visible forms.

With continued practice, however, attention gradually shifts away from the outward appearance of movement, toward the relationships that movement expresses. Tan Sau, Bong Sau, Pak Sau, Wu Sau, and the other familiar expressions remain valuable because they provide a common language through which experience can be communicated, but they cease to function as fixed destinations and instead become descriptive names for functional relationships emerging within continuous movement. The practitioner’s questions also begin to change, shifting away from technical labels and toward a deeper inquiry: “How should I organize my movement in response to the pressure, angle, and structure I am feeling?” Sometimes that organization resembles Tan Sau, sometimes it resembles Bong Sau, and at other times, movement passes so naturally between them that neither name alone fully describes what has occurred. The traditional names remain valuable because they describe recognizable functional expressions, but they no longer limit the practitioner’s perception of what movement can become, revealing it instead as a living process that continually reorganizes itself in response to changing relationships

Chapter 9: Wooden Dummy Training as Technฤ“

The ancient Greeks used the word technฤ“ to describe a cultivated art or craft. Although the term is often translated today as technique, that translation can be misleading. Technique commonly refers to a procedure: a method that can be demonstrated, copied, and repeated in order to produce a particular result, whereas technฤ“ referred to something more comprehensive. A technฤ“ joined knowledge with practice. It required not only familiarity with procedures, but also judgment, perception, experience, and the ability to act appropriately within changing circumstances. The skilled practitioner did not merely reproduce an established method; he or she understood the material, conditions, and purpose of the work well enough to adapt action intelligently. This distinction separates cultivated skill from mechanical execution. A person may imitate the visible actions of a craft without yet possessing the craft itself. The outward procedure can be copied, while the understanding that governs it remains undeveloped. Technฤ“ therefore concerns not only what is done, but the informed judgment through which action is organized. A musician demonstrates technฤ“ not by mechanically reproducing notes, but by understanding phrasing, tone, rhythm, and the demands of the composition. The distinction between technique and technฤ“ is therefore fundamental. Technique can remain external to the practitioner. It may be performed correctly while still depending largely upon memory and imitation. Technฤ“, by contrast, becomes embodied. Knowledge, perception, and action gradually cease to function as separate elements and begin operating as a unified capacity. This does not eliminate technique; it gives technique intelligence. The forms and named expressions of Wing Chun remain indispensable, just as scales remain indispensable to music and anatomical knowledge remains indispensable to medicine. Yet within a mature craft, such elements are no longer treated as ends in themselves. They become the language through which a deeper form of understanding is cultivated.

Conclusion: From Technฤ“ to Paideia

The concept of technฤ“ becomes fully intelligible only when placed within the broader Greek ideal of paideia. Paideia referred to the formation and cultivation of the human being. It was broader than instruction, professional training, or the acquisition of information. Its concern was not merely what a person knew or could produce, but what kind of person education gradually formed. Within this larger horizon, a cultivated craft could contribute to human formation. Through sustained practice, the practitioner developed not only competence, but also habits of attention, judgment, patience, discrimination, and responsibility. The craft educated the person through the demands it continually imposed. The relationship between technฤ“ and paideia may therefore be expressed precisely: technฤ“ cultivates excellence within a particular field of practice, while paideia concerns the wider formation of the person through such cultivation.

The two concepts are related, but they are not identical. A craft does not automatically produce human excellence, and technical mastery alone is not equivalent to paideia. A practitioner may become highly capable without becoming wiser, more perceptive, or more responsible. The formative value of a discipline depends upon how it is practiced and upon the qualities that practice encourages. This distinction is important for understanding the larger significance of wooden dummy training. The Mook Yan Jong should not simply be identified with Greek paideia, nor should a historical connection be implied. The traditions arose independently and belong to different cultural worlds. The comparison is philosophical rather than historical. Nevertheless, the relationship between technฤ“ and paideia offers a useful lens. It allows us to recognize that disciplined martial practice may be evaluated on two levels. On one level, it develops competence within a specific craft. On another, it may participate in the longer formation of the practitioner. The first level concerns skill, while the second concerns cultivation. When practice becomes attentive, reflective, and sustained over a lifetime, the distinction between these levels begins to narrow. The craft enters the practitionerโ€™s way of perceiving, judging, and acting. What began as the learning of movements becomes part of a broader education of the person. This is where technฤ“ opens toward paideia.
